The
WEATHERLY
Institute for Robotics and engineering
The Weatherly Institute for Robotics and Engineering has the following divisions: The Junior Lego League for children ages 6 - 9. This program is NOT a baby sitting service but is aimed at giving our youngest Engineers and Scientists a challenging role that is fun and stimulating. The program models itself after the First Lego League but does not have competitions. Instead it allows the "kids" to demonstrate what they learn and accomplish in the program and to share it with their peers, parents and the public. This group will meet once each week for two hours on Mondays from 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM, parents are welcome to stay but must watch, listen and support, not participate! The "Lego Lords" features beginning robotics for those children from 9 - 14. They learn basic robotic design, beginning programming, beginning electronics, and team work. They will also have a chance to compete each year in the First Lego League Robotic Challenge. This year we are participating in the FIRST Lego League Challenge "Power Puzzle", a study of alternative energies available to us and how we should implement them. This club meets on Thursday from 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM. AGAIN THIS YEAR! The Weatherly Institute for Robotics and Engineering will be hosting the FIRST Tech Challenge, "QUAD QUANDARY" we will be putting a FIRST Tech Robotics Challenge Team in the field as well. Last year Weatherly hosted forty-three teams from all over the eastern seaboard.
This group has been invited by the Executive Director, Stephen Kew-Goodale, to participate in a unique program that bridges the knowledge gap between the First Lego League and the First High School Robotics Program. They will be creating "Metallic Robots" and using C-Programming Language to develop competition robots for the FIRST Tech Championship to be held right here in Weatherly PA, on March 8th, 2008. These robots while much smaller then the high school Bots are just as demanding in that the young men and women must have an understanding of engineering, electronics, physics, math and computer programming to accomplish the competitions goals. This group meets Wednesday evenings from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM. The "Wreckers" are High School aged Children (up to 18 years old), who while learning all the basics, have a chance to become part of the usFIRST.org Robotic Challenge, where they create a large metallic based robot and enter a global competition each year. This level features sophisticated engineering, high level programming and electronics. Last year we participated in the Philadelphia Regional competition, and this year we plan to return! These young adults meet Tuesdays from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM Our final level is our Adult Robotics Club (18 and older). This club is meant to spark the imagination of our older citizens and includes everything from basics to advanced robotics with the goal of entering regional adult competitions. The adult club is also mandated to help mentor and guide the younger clubs, providing expertise, man hours, money and fund raising time to support the clubs. This group meets Wednesdays from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM, all adults are invited. I am told that this group wants to compete against our First Lego League group for bragging rights! All activities meet at The Weatherly Institute for Robotics and Engineering's new offices located at 103 Carbon Street Weatherly, PA 18255. Call Stephen Kew-Goodale with any questions @ 570-427-4661
